"Poetry is the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash." Leonard Cohen

It was, they all agreed
his acquisition of that car
or rather,
his inheriting such
a flamboyant vehicle

Just the sound of its
motor grumbling as
it rounded
the turns leading
to their house
The tires gobbling
the miles with the
of a savage beast,
one with an insatiable
put her teeth on edge.

But, worse -- or better,
depending who you asked,
or how you viewed
this point...
when he pulled into
the drive and the sun
shone full on his
face...there was such
bliss registered

Feelings got jumbled
about this, as might
be expected;
would anyone begrudge
him this joy?
How could she,
his long-suffering
wife, signal
her irritation in
a way that would
not disclose how
petty, she

Maybe, how petty
she was being
about this last
granted him.
It was, as the
saying went,

  1. Many things are complicated...particularly last hoorahs! Well penned

  2. "tires gobbling
    the miles with the
    mindlessness" ... Love this.

    Gorgeous car.

  3. We just had "Hot August Nights" here in Reno--a huge classic car event. They definitely make a statement!

  4. This reminds me of a friend of ours - their son bought a fancy race car but hasn't been able to really drive it and it pretty much is stored in their garage for years (not his as he doesn't have one). The parents can't drive it and have other family members take her for a spin to keep it 'running' because it is a stick. Now finally they are trying to sell it. Which reminds me of the joke about the two best days of a boat owners life. The day they buy the boat and the day they sell it.

The Sonja Series is fun for me to write. Not meant to be too dark. But when there are secrets of any kind... well it gets complicated.

    Thanks for stopping by ~Jules

  5. That's a good looking car. I wouldn't mind the tires gobbling the miles if I was driving it. :-)

  6. Well-penned poem, Sharon. I haven't seen you at The Whirl for some time, it is nice to see you.
